“Learn how to see... realize that everything connects to everything else” - Leonardo De Vinci
Artist background Born into the unique wilderness of Zimbabwe, I grew up exploring on the door step wild lands, game reserves, and farmlands. The grandeur and stillness of the colour stained granite outcrops of the World Heritage site Matobo, an area of high botanical diversity and home to the highest population of the African Leopard is the backdrop of my youth which has inspired much of my work. Also, within easy reach were the diverse systems of the great Zambezi and Limpopo rivers and the Hwange Game Reserve where I fell in love with the inner and exterior beauty of the Elephant. Observing right across southern Africa is the Zebra which my mind never tires of trying to capture. Botswana is deeply etched into my heart and I feel at one with the land. I have travelled remote areas of it by light aircraft, train, and 4x4. I feel drawn to paint here as it is one of the most beautiful and exciting last wildernesses of Africa. Throughout my life, I have visited and lived in Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa. Along this beautiful Indian Ocean coastline I explored many of the national and private game reserves, and the iSimangaliso wetlands. I also had the opportunity to grow unusual, colourful exotic plants in this tropical coastal strip for my botanical artwork. I have a deep love of all nature, which is reflected in my lifelong challenge to study and capture it artistically. If I am not inspired, captivated or lost in expression with the tools of my trade then I am painting with my eyes or drawing from memories. I seek to capture moments showing the unusual, the unnoticed and the everyday exquisite beauty that heightens awareness of the natural world. Being entirely self-taught, observation and drawing have been a big part of my life from childhood and today I continue to progress and develop my passion. Although much of my work is and appears realist it is creatively based with imagination, abstraction and media experimentation. Having worked on a drawing board for 12 years producing commercial art, illustrations, mapping, site layouts and working drawings for multiple industries, I have a well-established affinity with pen and ink. I have taken this further by combining my drawing and observational skills to creatively work in the stippling method and multi-variations of pen, brush, and ink which I am exhibiting on this website. My wildlife drawing and painting techniques and interpretations are drawn from my experiences and knowledge gained naturally from being born and immersed in Africa's wild lands. |
